During my travels to Cuba and the Cook Islands this past winter, I picked up so many cute vacation outfits along the way — including the prettiest handmade crochet dress, which quickly became my favourite vacation outfit.
I purchased this beautiful crochet dress from a random clothes vendor in my Varadero hotel. The dresses available for sale were 100% handmade by local Cubans and featured some beautiful and unique designs. The designs immediately caught my eye because the craftsmanship is truly impeccable. The crochet is thick and heavy, which is a huge plus, and the quality is top notch.
I’m really happy I bought this dress because not only was I helping out the Cuban economy with this purchase, but this gorgeous dress turned out to be a real lifesaver during my Cook Islands trip!
The climate in the Cook Islands was extremely hot and humid during my time there, and this dress managed to keep me cool and comfortable the entire time that I wore it.
For those of you who are not familiar with the Cook Islands, it’s a small island nation in the south Pacific Ocean, located between New Zealand and the French Polynesia. Cook Islands is made up of a few picture-perfect tropical islands, and is often compared to Hawaii … expect it is virtually untouched by mass tourism, so it’s like how Hawaii was 50 years ago.
The cut-outs of this dress provide a nice cooling effect and make it stand out so much. I truly felt like a goddess in this dress and I’ve received so many compliments while wearing it!
I paired this crochet dress with a flower crown that I found at a local souvenir shop in Avarua, the capital city of the Cook Islands. This flower crown is popular in Polynesian islands and is often called haku lei. I chose mine with minimal flowers but lots of greenery.
Another Polynesian touch that I added to this outfit is a tiare flower necklace. I bought it from Tokerau Jim, a popular jewellery store on Rarotonga, and it’s carved out of a pearl shell. The owner Jim makes all his jewellery by hand and sources all of his pearls from the Cook Islands.
I chose the tiare flower as my design because it’s is a small white gardenia flower that is abundant in the Cook Islands and other Polynesian islands. It’s known as the queen of all flowers, and represents the simplicity and beauty of the islands. I couldn’t think of a more perfect pairing to this outfit.
