10 Summer Makeup Tips for Hot Weather

Here are my top 10 tips for ensuring that your makeup always looks flawless during the summer, despite the heat or humidity.

Wear sunscreen daily

Summer can hard on your skin because it makes it very vulnerable to harmful UV rays, burns, dehydration, and dryness. That’s why it’s so important to wear sunscreen every day (even on those cloudy summer days) to ensure that your skin is protected from those strong summer rays.

Wearing sunscreen also ensures that your skin ages well, as unprotected sunscreen exposure is linked to premature wrinkles and aging. Wear SPF 30 or higher on your face to ensure that your skin is protected.

Keep your skin hydrated

Wearing a hydrating moisturizer or serum every day is really important because the heat can cause your skin to lose moisture, resulting in a dull and lifeless look. Depending on your skin type, you should wear either a cream-based, liquid or gel moisturizer.

I’m currently using a Vichy moisturizer from their Aqualia line and I’m really happy with it. Click here to learn more about my favourite summer skincare products.

Remember that less is more

Wearing a lot of makeup on your face in the heat of the summer can lead to messy looks when makeup smudges. We all sweat more during the summer months, and none of us want our makeup to run down our faces. In addition to smudged mascara and eyeliner, heavy makeup can also mix with the natural oils of your face and lead to clogged pores and acne.

For this reason, I like to let my skin breathe in the warmer months, especially when I go to the beach or the pool and spend an extended period of time in the sun.

Remember, you don’t need a lot of makeup to look beautiful and polished. Less is more!

Don’t wear heavy foundation

Because you’re more likely to perspire in the summer months, I recommend not wearing traditional foundation during the day as it can lead to a cakey appearance and clogged pores. Stick with a mineral foundation or a BB and CC cream instead, which are a lot lighter and look more natural on the skin in direct sunlight.

Use powders instead of cream-based products

Cream-based products are more suitable for fall and winter months because they tend to slide around too much during the summertime. Wear powder-based eye shadows, blushes, bronzers, and contour products to ensure that your makeup always looks fresh and stays in place.

Liven up your complexion with peach or coral blush

Peachy and coral blushes are so stunning, especially during the warmer months. They add a healthy warmth to your cheeks and make you look healthy and well-rested.

Peach blushes that I recommend are MAC Cosmetics Peaches, NARS Orgasm and Tarte Exposed. For coral blush, I recommend MAC Cosmetics Peachykeen and Milani Luminoso.

Use bronzer to get that perfect summer glow

You don’t need to bake in the sun all day to get that sun-kissed glow. Instead, you can enhance or even fake that summer tan with a good bronzer. A sweep across your forehead, cheekbones, and along your collarbone can make the world of difference to skin that’s looking a little lackluster.

The secret of the perfect bronze glow is to choose a matte bronzer because they look more natural than the shimmer alternatives.

For natural-looking bronzers, I recommend Hoola by Benefit, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Bronzer and Marc Jacobs O!Mega Bronzer

Dab on some highlighter for luminosity

I know that wearing highlighter in the summer can be difficult. In the heat, highlighter can make you sweaty instead of glowy. That’s why I recommend using a highlighter sparingly and strategically. A little highlighter can go a long way to get that coveted lit-from-within look.

I like to dab a little bit of highlighter to the top of my brow bone and to the top of my cheekbones to create that healthy glow. My favourite highlighter is Ambient Highlighting Powder in Luminous Light because it looks really natural on the skin.

Wear waterproof mascara or invest in eyelash extensions

Waterproof mascara is a must if you engage in a lot of outdoor pursuits or do any type of swimming. Because so many of us spend a lot of time at the pool or the beach during the summer months, it’s important to ensure that our mascara doesn’t glide around after we take a dip to cool off.

I also recommend investing in eyelash extensions if you can afford them because you don’t have to worry about mascara when you have them on. A classic or volume set can give you that beautiful fluttery look without cosmetics. For that reason, eyelash extensions can also save a lot of time when you’re getting ready in the morning!

Enhance your lips with a lip stain or gloss

Lastly, dab on a nice lip stain or gloss and you’re good to go! Lip stains are great because they look very natural on the lips and are long-lasting. Although glosses don’t last nearly as long, they make the lips look shiny and hydrated, giving them an overall juicy and kissable appearance.

Personally, I love peachy-pink lip shades in the summer. My favourite gloss right now is the original Gloss Bomb by Fenty Beauty because it’s the perfect peachy-nude for summer.
